For those following my saga of the 966/loader purchase, I still haven't got it bought yet, as the gentleman doesn't have the tractor home for inspection yet.

On the topic of 18.4 x34 rear tires.....if I were to want to move up to 18.4 X 38's, what's the most cost effective way to do that? Do I look for a pair of step-up rims at a salvage yard? Any ideas? Same question on the fronts, if i'd like to go from 15 inch tires to 16 inch tires, do I need to find a pair of 1086 rims? Will they just bolt right up? Then will I have enough spindle clearance for the 11.00 X 16's?

Thanks
DJL

The most cost effective solution is to crowbar on a pair of 20.8x34s on the existing rims and call it good.

There are three ways to go to 38's:
1. Step rims.
2. Step lugs.
3. 38" hubs.

DJ,

The step rims won't let you adjust the rear stance on the dual-bead rim and the fronts would take a different hub like the other fellas say.

What are you going to be using it for? If this is just going to be a light duty/yard/loader tractor, you could just leave it the way it is.

in one of my IH books, the author relays his experience during field demonstrations when these machines were new that 34s performed better than 38s. something about torque increases because of smaller diameter if i recall correctly.

Precisely. Smaller diameter (shorter) tire takes less power to turn, so there's more power to do work.

Of course, if you're using the tachometer to judge ground speed, you think you're going like a bat out of hell and the tractor has tons of power. That is, until the same tractor with 38's goes rolling by like you're standing still!

They didn't recalibrate the tachometer for different sized tires.

I remember one guy coming on here bragging about how much power his tractor had and how fast he was going pulling some big implement... on 18.4x34 tires, when his tractor was supposed to have 38's, maybe even 20.8x38s as I recall.

Amen to that!

I lost a gear when going from 16.9s to 18.4 tires on the same plow. Took some "gettin' used to" in my head. :>)

My 1066 has the 8 bolt pattern with the 15" rims.

DJL may have 8 bolt already also.

I maybe interested in those 16" if he's not.

Where are you located pcy1066?

Gary
