Old H workout, and noises...?

Well, took the old reconstituted H off feed duty Sunday and put a six foot disk on it in the garden for about an hour, then put on a 12' harrow, gave her a good workout and even managed to get the temp up to mid. "cold". I've heard the noises before occasionally but tried to ignore them as I didn't know what it was and had it tuned to the best of my ability already... But there are some definate strange heavy clattering noises when she's under a load. Sounds too heavy for valves, but this is my first H. Oil pressure's good, but I'm also using forty wieght. It's consistent, and comes in when she loads, kinda sounds like its coming out of the exhaust. Anybody got a prognosis for these symptoms? Humms like a kitten with no load, no noises at all. Matt.

TIming could be advanced too far causing spark knock. If the static timing is perfect, then I might look into the advance mechanism in the distributor (under the breaker plate. Another way to test it is to use a small (old lAWN MOWER) gas tank full of premium fuel, if that cures it, the timing is probably an issue. JimN

Thanks Jay, was hoping to get some ideas that did not point to something major... After all the time I've put into this thing its a discouraging thought. Maybe it is the timing, I did think it was a little "barky". I just tuned it by ear. But after adjustment it ran sooooo good I never thought about timing again. Will get back to ya'll about it. Matt.

I wouldn't use that 87 octane gasoline in it either. Hal
