I am working on a Farmall 460 engine and I am having problems getting the aglinment dowels to fit into place. They are binding up when I put the bearing clip into place. What do I need to do to get them to go in flush?

I just did that -- do you have a service manual? I assume you mean the bearing cap. The number, in this case 4, precedes the part number on the cap. That number goes toward the cam side of the engine. When you install the cap, the service manual says to use a tool that fits in the holes that the rubber dowels go in, I used bolts of about the right size, then torqued the bolts that hold the cap on. Remove whatever you use, oil the plugs, use a rod the size of the holes in the plugs-- I used a phillips screwdriver-- and push the plugs in.

Are you talking about the tabs on the bearings not fitting into the block and cap or are you trying to assemble the cap to the block with the tabs on the sme side of the block?

The assembling of mains on these engines is diffrerent than most other engines. The main tabs assemble into the block 180 degrees apart. Also the arrow on the cap should point to the front of the engine.

If the bearings do not fit the block and cap then you have the wrong bearings for your engine.

There was a change in main bearings during the production run of that series of tractors that delt with the OD of the thrust bearing. The later engines use a larger bearing. If this is the bearing that is causing the problem make sure if you have the larger bearing that the block is machined to accept that size other wise you will need to get the smaller bearing.

Alan, you arn't alone, alot of us can't sleep (in my case it's to many naps) but I can't go on without my nap. You're tryin to figure out a loader bracket and I'm just trying to find the energy to do a valve job on the 460.
