Last time I started the W-6<
It was ok, then after this parade i was in last summer, I accidently forgot to fill the hydralic tank, and when i was all done, ready to go home,
I went to start it, & drive it home,
and the thing would barely run,
I looked at the hyd pump?
and it was smoking hot, so i said ohh boy , i guess it was low on fluid, so I parked it on side of road, left it there for two night,s,
went back to it to start it, and it ran ok with the fluid in it,
But i got a little closer to the House and it was leaking fluid underneath engine at the clutch
housing alot of fluid came out , so i shut it off, and i towed it home,
I didnt mess up the pump,
But,,,?
How did it get into the sump, and start to leak out the bottom where the clutch is?
I smelled the oil in the sump, and it smelled like hyd fluid, and was thin like water just like hyd fluid,
So,,,,, ?
Now, what do I do,
This thing was jury rigged for a loader and then the hyd tank lines were capped off,so the two line,s to the back from the front pump had no where to run to and just stopped, I looked at the line,s, and they were alway,s vibrating and hot to the touch, and I have a feeling that the fluid had no where to go and just backed up pressure when it went to the back , & there wasnt any return line to the front
so it could run smooth in a circuit, around, and back to the front pump,
Could it have blown a seal in the clutch area and that,s why it started to leak when I was bringing it home?
I really need help on this as it is detrimental to tractor being redone the right way,

Well, running the pump without fluid probably did mess it up pretty good. Like others have said, it probably took out the front seal and started dumping hydraulic fluid into the crankcase. Anytime a pump gets that hot, it does damage to the bearings and the internal gears. The rear main seal on these tractors are designed to keep oil that is splashed up there from dripping out. They were not designed to be submerged themselves. When the level got too high, it just pushed past the seal and leaked out of the clutch housing.

Now for the hydraulic system: So if there is no line to the reservoir, how do you add hydraulic fluid to the system? If the tubes were capped directly from the pump, the fluid cannot go anywhere, so the fluid will continue to circulate within the pump and the flow rate at the pump exit will be zero. Running it for a short time this way isn't bad, but it will heat up and it will put a heavy load on the motor. It should not be operated like this for very long, as it is not good for any pump to be pumping a static or non-moving fluid.

Hi Chadd,
the line,s on the 6?
well,,, two of em go from the pump to the back resivour tank under the gas tank,
And the resivour tank has two pipe,s sticking out of it on the left side evedently where someone wanted to make it easier to fill the hyd tank, and check the level,
the top one is where I put fluid in it Chadd,
and when it,s full,
It will show fluid by starting to come out that fill pipe,
Really stupid Idea, right there at the tank on right side is where thier caped off, and all that,s there is
two small steel pipe,s coming out of the right side of the resivour with elbow,s on them,
these are where the hose,s are hooked to,
Just from there to the front pump, no where else,
no return line,no circular line around pump,
One line is longer that the other sheesh,,,?
I think this is why the thing was feeling all hot and vibrating on the line to the back tank,
No where for the fluid to go,
Chadd,
Ill take pic,s of it,and ill try to get it on your email address, ok so you can see this for your self,
You probably wont believe it when you see it, Kirk,

Pretty sure you took out the front seal in the pump. Hyd fluid will spray out the front seal into the timing cover and make its way to the oil pan. When the oil pan gets too full its gotta go somewhare and it went out your pan gasket or rear main seal.

I would highly recommend buying a service manual for your W-6. What year is your tractor? I have a 48' and I don't have any pump on mine.
