How am I going to get these wheels off?

I took closer looks of the pics of my wheels. Here is the left outside hub.

See the weld? That worries me. Unless that cotter bolt is all that is holding it to the axel. Any ideas?

Here is the inside of that left wheel

And here is the inside of the right wheel.

See the difference? The right side looks clean. The left side looks like it has a weld on it. I haven't tried to move or remove the wheels yet, but what am I going to do if the old owner welded that wheel to the axel?

Man, and I thought my H looked bad! lol Totally kiddin man. Like I told you the other day, the harder it is the greater the satisfaction and knowledged gained.

Here's where I am with my H. Got my motor back, went to bolt on the flywheel and can't find the doggoned bolts. Crap! So I started grinding paint on the clutch tube, and now I guess I'm doing a "bare metal" restore.

Keep at it. I am.

You are getting the cart way ahead of the horse. You pull the wheels when you are getting ready to paint. Then you can pull the axles and replace those leaking seals and probably damaged outer bearings. That's after you get the engine rebuilt, brakes done, cooling system done, front end done.
Locate new wheels, rims, and tires, get them painted. Lets just hear how the exhaust pipe removal went.

See all that grease at the outer axle housings? Looks like you need to pull both axles anyway for bearings and seals. Did you get that exhaust pipe out yet? So far you have asked this forum how to do about a gazillion different things and gotten lots of tips. Yet I don't see that you have done anything at all yet. Are you just building a reference file in the event that someday you do repair something on the H? We never here how the task was or wasn't accomplished. Sure hope you are filing all the replies somewhere you can find them when you start.

I guess if I wanted "easy" I shouldn't have bought a 60 year old tractor. heh!

I cant see that the hubs are welded to the axle either. I agree with most posts that you need to remove the old wheels first. You can tell if there is fluid in the tires by getting the valve stem at the bottom and removing the core. You'll see fluid start to seep out once the core is partially removed. Either way they are heavy so stay clear when you take the last nut off.

I think you just have a set screw holding the keys in place. once the wheel is off I would soak it all down with penetrating oil, remove the set screws and hit it a few good licks. With luck you may be able to drive them off. I would sure try that first, then resort to more drastic measures. Clean the outer axle real good.

Richard in NZ has the ticket. As he indicates, loosen (or twist off) the lugnuts on both wheels (not much, but to get them broken loose). Jack up the tractor, and block under the axle housing on each side so that the tires are just barely off the ground. Then remove the lug bolts. Be careful with the tires, they may be full of liquid. They may weigh 1000# each and can kill you. A good professional level ton and a half cherry picker is definately needed (rental is OK).
When the tires (which have a standard pattern to the bolts, and can be sold on Ebay easily) are out of the way, use an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel to grind through the hub along the keyway. This will take several hours, and many sparks, and old cloths, and dirt, and a mask, and gogles. When cut through, wedge the crack apart with chisels to open the hole, and slide them off. If you want to go faster, have someone with a portable cutting torch (who knows how to use it) come over and cut the off. THis is best done outside due to the far hotter sparks and serious hot metal.
Getting them off by force is possible with a heavy gear puller and some heat. Sanding and polishing the outer end of the axle, and using a porta power would also work. Good luck, it is possible, but a serious task. I do not believe they are welded at the axle on either side. JimN

I'll bet you can find a left axle a hell of a lot cheaper and faster than messing with that junk. Pull the axle and the hub and use it for a boat anchor.

Nevermind, I see your post below with your "modified" 46 H
The tires make it look almost like a utility tractor ; )

I don't think either hub is welded to the axle. But yeah, they are gonna come off hard. Unbolt the wheels first and get them out of the way. (do one side at a time) Probably heat and lots of it. A good man on a torch could split the hubs and they would slide right off. Otherwise you are going to have to pull the axles and use a large press.

I'm not familiar with how the bull gear comes off but if you can take the rim and tire off do that.

Then slide the axle out of the bull gear and take it to a shop that has a large press.

Either they or you can grind the weld away and press it off.

If there is no reason to take it apart other than to get it back to original you may want to leave it.

Other option is a replacement axle and hub.

What model is this with that type of hub. I thought you bought a Farmall H?

Just my thoughts Gary

Sorry should have read next post first I see you do have a Farmall H.

You may as well use option 2 if replacing the hub with original.

I doubt you will find a trade but the rims and tires may have a value to someone.

Yep, its just that grub screw holding that hub to the axle shaft, bet it still takes some getting off. Looks like someone has made an adaptor hub to take those bolt on wheels. If you are reverting back to original type wheels you may be as quick to run a disc cutter straght trough the hub along the key way and split them, then open them out with a chisel in the slot you have made.
