The crankshaft that is in my parts tractor may not be good enough to ever be worth rebuilding. A co-worker has a motor from about a 1950 M that still has the crankshaft in it. If it is still in good shape would it fit in a 1956, 400 block? Did they all use the same front and rear seals?

If the shaft is too far gone to be turned for 400 bearings you may be able to get it reground to M specs and then use M bearings. You may even get by with standard M bearings.

Need to know the serial no. of the M.Early Ms had smaller mains and rod bearings. The break was at syn.278049 acording to the book I have. Also do a measurment on the shaft to make sure. These are the measurement for the 400 rods 2.547-2.5485 Mains 2.8075-2.8085

Use the M bearings instead of the 400 bearings. Both rod and mains. Not too sure on the rear main seal,, but the front seal is whatever pulley you use, but thinking it all will interchange.
