I have a 52 farmall h.Everything was fine last fall.It has been very cold here but this past week it has been in the forties.Anyhow,I left it in neutral and the weather was nice so I started it up but the shift lever was pretty stiff and I could not get it in gear so I fished around awhile then it appeared to go into 4th so I moved it from 4th to 1st and let the clutch out but it seems like the trans is locked up.I put it in reverse and the same thing happens. When I go between 1st and reverse it will go forward in what appears to be 4th.There is no neutral. What do I do now?

I got the plugs out and then the pin and the shifter.Got all three dogs aligned for neutral using a couple big screwdrivers. It is fixed!I want to thank all who helped me with this.Could not have done it without you. Thanks again.DM

There are usually two small plugs in the shifter tower system that need to come out (at least one) the pin under that is driven out the other side, and the lever comes out. Align the rails (the one on the left rear will be pushed back) use a screw driver to pull it forward to align with the others. Pushing in the clutch will/may help. The tip has been pictured in this forum many times, it is kinda the shape od a chicklet chewing gum (before chewing). It can be welded up some on the bottom corners, then ground down to fit nice, and shift well into all gears without binding (this takes patience, and several fitting sessions) It is not a size thing to measure, it is sized to match what is worn on the rails. If the plugs fall out, put some #1 hardening permatex on them to hold them in place. I hope this helps. JimN

The rear end was not frozen.I had left it in neutral last fall.I could push it by hand until I tried to get it into a gear.It appears to be in 4th which is where it went initially then i moved it to 1st and reverse where the lever is now. With the lever midway between 1st and reverse it will drive forward. If I put it in reverse or 1st it is defintely locked up.How do you get the shifter off.I see a pin about 3/8" in diameter.Do I knock this out and lift up on the shifter? This pin is under a cup type mechanism with a spring above it and a cotter key.Standing behind the tractor looking forward do I drive it from right to left or left to right? How do i align the shift rails so that they are in the correct position?

DM you are on the right trail. I think the pin will come out either side. After lifting out shifter look down the hole and you can see rails. Take a big screwdriver or something like it and alighn the recessed notches in rails to the same middle position this will be neutral. reinstall shifter and pin it should work. You are stuck in 4th gear. There is no certain amount to build up that shifter. Use a little trial and error. Good Luck.

check the rear end grease to see if there is water in there. loosen the drain plug till you have a few threads holding it and see if water comes out. you may have had a block of ice in there that caused the problem.

Yep I agree with George, When you get the shifter off and get the rails centered, you might want to weld up the end of the shifter where it has worn from 60 yrs of use. My 424 stuck just like yours did. It was cold etc. I have a feeling there was Ice in the tranny oil and it kept the slider gears from moving and I forced the shifter to pop out of the rail. I drained the oil out of the tranny yesterday (60 and SUNNY!) and it was milky. So new tranny oil, welded up shifter and it works like a champ again. I also had to do the same weldup on my 460D

My old M has done that so many times that the previous owner threw away the pin and stuck in a bolt.

I have learned to shift slow. BUT, what are the dimensions supposed be on thebottom of that stick? No one has ever said.

I am sure that when I get around to draining the gear oil that it will be quite milky.I agree that it was probably darn near frozen. When I did get a gear which is 4th i presume then moved it to 1st,something did not follow. When I find out how to get the shifter off and the rails aligned I should be good to go.I assume that there is a round ball on the end of the shifter. When I get around to getting that built up,how far do I go?.005,.010?I realize that this will depend on wear and anything bigger than it is now will be an improvement.I want to thank all you guys for helping me out with information and with your help I will get this fixed.

Sounds like your tractor is in two gears. We discussed this a couple days ago remove shifter and alighn shifting rails to neutral, then reinstall shifter and see if that helps. If not let us know and we'll try something else.
