Hey,

I've got the front end on my SM completely tore down. I've been soaking the entire front end casting in degreaser and wire brushing it (off the tractor) It's obvious I'm never going to get it completely clean this way, especially up into the hollowed out parts of the castings. This 50 some odd year old crap is baked on like asphalt. I'm doing a full rebuild so I might as well get it completely clean. Any ideas? steam cleaner, car wash, pressure washer, hot water in a 55 gallon barrel? What have you guys done in the past?

Thanks,

Mark

Does the "complete rebuild" include painting it? If so then use oven cleaner a few times to cut the greese and paint. After that then sand blast it to get it to bear metal.

If you have access to a cutting torch, I have used the heat to burn the oil out of the grease and then used a wire brush to remove the dried up remnants.

First of all, that would be pretty neat if you were soaking it in degreaser on the tractor. I have a mental picture... The part is strong enough to withstand blasting so I may look at that. I once new a guy who sanded everything! That would take forever and still not get into the small spaces. Sorry I couldnt be more helpful.

I meant spraying on engine degreaser a couple of times a day.
