SC Top Cover Removal?

Hi all.

I am down to the basic chassis of the Farmall SC I am restoring. I hadn't planned on removing the Top Cover, but while unbolting the L-brackets on each side of the seat support/tool box where the Fast Hitch shaft passes through, I twisted one of the bolts off.

Both bolts, one on the left and one on the right, were badly rusted where moisture and dirt collected in the recess pocket where the bolt heads rest. After twisting the first one off with a air tool. I went slower and used heat and slow action with a hand tool to remove the second without twisting it off.

In the attached picture you can see the broken bolt in the lower right where I have used some heat. So now I have to remove the top cover to get at the broken bolt.

I have never had a top cover off before;

Is the top cover just lid over the final drive and transmission?

Is there anything I should be watching out for when I remove the top cover?

Perhaps you can weld a new nut on top of your broken bolt and ease it out that way. The heat from welding will help loosen it. It's always worth a try.

The simple answer to your question is no -- put the shifter in neutral and lift straight up, either with help or an engine hoist. You might try to loosen the cover first by tapping in a thin, rigid paint scraper in a couple of places. What you did is why I don't use an air ratchet. While you are inside, drain and wipe out all the crud that will be in there.

The shifting forks will also come with the deck you must alighn them properly when reinstalling. That deck gasket is a little pricey.
