Fill and drain plug locations on a Farmall A

I can see two fill plugs located near the shift lever and two drain plugs
located on the very bottom of each axle housing on the inside
near each rear tire. Are these the only plugs? What weight of oil do I add here? Thanks. I am wanting to change all the fluids prior to restoration. Any help would be appreciated.

The transmission has three plugs - a fill plug (on top, by the shifter), a drain plug (the lowest plug on the unit), and a level plug (ahead of the rear tire, I believe).

The two plugs on the lower sheet-metal reduction gear housings are fill plugs - as the others said, you must remove the housing or suction out the oil to drain it. These reduction gear housings are not tied (with a liquid passage) in any way to the transmission. You may have to loosen or remove the drawbar to get to these fill plugs.

When I bought my Super A, someone had filled the transmission almost to the top - about two gallons worth! I guess they didn't know about the fill level plug!

The IH manual recommends diluting the trans. oil with one cup of kerosene in extremely cold conditions, and then changing the oil in the spring when it gets warmer. Get a copy of the owner's manual, and it will show you all kinds of interesting maintenance stuff you wouldn't otherwise be able to figure out on your own (even if you're a pretty good gearhead). I got mine at the IH dealership for less than $20.

I was just into the back end of my Farmall B, and I'm assuming the transmission and final drives are identical to the A. The transmission and each final drive has their own unique gearlube supply. The plugs you see near each rear tire are the fill level holes for the final drives. I chose not to remove the lower housings on the final drives, and removed the old gearlube with a suction gun. I had to fish the suction gun hose in around the bull gear, but I think I got most of it out. The transmission has its own (6 quart?) gearlube supply, with a rather large fill plug in the top plate and (similar) drain plug on the RH side (toward the back, I think?). There is at least one other, smaller plug on the transmission and I'm not sure if it is a fill level plug or not. If you have a flat belt pulley drive, it also has a fill plug, but this drive unit shares gearlube with the transmission, and that fill plug isn't normally used. My Case-IH dealer says that the book recommends 80W-90 gearlube for both transmission and final drives. Hope this helps.

Let's see... To get the final drive lube out, I think you have to take off the pan on the bottom of the final drives (near each wheel), then fill to the level of the plug. For the transmission, there is a drain plug in the bottom of the transmission on the lower right hand side of the diferential case. I would recommend a good rinse with kerosene before refilling (to get rid of sludge and wash out any dirt or debris) to the oil level plug. If you are going to restore the tractor, might as well take the transmission top cover off when you do this rinse, as it will give you an opportunity to check the condition of the shifter forks, gears, etc. Operators manual says use SAE 90 from 20-50 degrees and SAE 140 or 160 from 50-90 degrees. If you aren't planning on heavy use, SAE 90 should be fine for all temps. BTW, there is also a plug in the top of the PTO drive, and you might want to add the first quart of transmission lube through that hole, to make sure the PTO isn't dry when you first start it up.

I cannot find the oil level plug on my 1975 Farmall 140. Can anyone help? The operator's manual says it is on the left side of the transmission??
