The gas tank on my old M has a lot of gook and rust in he bottom. It has set up for many years and the gas hardened, plus the bottom of the tank is rusty. I have heard that Muratic acid will clean the tank of rust, etc. Has anyone used this method. If so, how much acid to water, etc? How long do I leave it in the tank? I have a couple gallons of muratic acid used for cleaning pools that is 31.45% hydrochloric. Will this work?

Yes I have and it works ; but it dosen't keep the rust from coming back ; a 5 part to 1 part overnight will do the trick but be very careful : wear plastic gloves and i would suggest a gas mask only if your going to be around it alot ; i used a tank liner for my gas tank ; got the liner from a motorcycle shop or dealership ;without the liner the gas tank will rust right back evrn worst than it was before; oh yea make sure that you dilute the acid with warter to bring it to neutral before getting rid of it

The acid in the tank cleaning products is phosriphic acid. (dont know if i spelled it right). You can get it at hardware stores. It does a better job on rust. Rinse with acetone. You will need a sealer such as Kreem or one of the other products mentioned to keep it from rusting again. Kreem has a kit with everything you need. One jar of sealer is probablyy enough but the acid is only enough for one motorcycle tank. You can usually find it at motorcycle stores, or at least they may be albe to order it.

if the tank is heavily rusted the acid will not work. muratic is for etching the surface prior to paintingn or sealing. carb cleaner will get out the gunk. you need a rust remover from Eastwood or someone ot get the heavy rust out.

I used Eastwood's tank sealer to seal a gas tank for a C. One of the steps with the Eastwood sealer kit was to use muratic acid. Don't recall where that was in the sequence, but I think a rust remover was used before the muratic. There was another metal etch prep somewhere in there too. You need to get as much loose rust out first before you do anything. There are better rust removers than the muratic, I think. The muratic will be to etch the surface in preparation for the sealer system after you have most of the rust out. If you do use muratic what you want to do after is wash the tank several times with water, gallon or so of water, slosh around, pour out and repeat at least 3 or 4 times. Then use acetone to get the water out. pour in about a pint of acetone, slosh around and pour it out. Do this about 4 times as well to dry the water out. Do the acetone outside away from any ignition sources, and also in the shade it's very flammable and volatile and will evaporate quickly in the heat of the sun, even at fairly low temp. With the muratic, be sure to wear protective clothing, rubber apron, gloves and eye protection.

The problem with muratic acid, is that it has to be neutralized immediately after the desired effect has taken place, otherwise the rust will reappear. There are other chemicals on the market that claim not to allow rust to reappear.

I used two gallon of carburator cleaner in my F-30 gas tank. This worked very good, as for the rust, you my need to seal the tank on the inside with the tank coating you can buy.

We went to a parts house to get a tank cleaner and a tank sealer for our old international truck which kept sucking rust into the carb, and the Can of tank sealer and the guy working there told me to use a gallon of muratic acid to clean the tank, rinse the tank, put more acid in it, then put in the tank sealer immediately after the acid. So that should work.
