I have a 49 super A. When I rebuilt mine, I went to the IH dealer and was lucky enough to get a 75 yr. old Parts man. My super a had a vertical shaft which was square on the bottom with a square
hole in the steering arm. This old guy said that IH made a kit about 50 years ago to replace these
parts. but it wasn't available any more but the parts were available individually. The thing is you get parts from a 140 or newer super a replacement, which is a vertical shaft with a tapered, keyed, threaded end . and a steering arm
with a tapered hole you can tighten it up and keepit tight. BUTTTTT. before you put it back
together, put a new keyway in the steerin sector
gear inside the gearbox. GOOD LUCK

The steering box is not complicated. Hardest part will be you have to remove the front axle to do a rebuild. Be sure to replace all the seals while you are in there and double check all the bearings and bushings to be sure they have no play and replace them too if in doubt. Before you take the axle off, you may want to check the thrust bearing on the worm gear to see if it is worn. You can do that by taking the big plug out of the front of the gear housing and then screwing the worm out far enough to check the bearing for play. Drain the oil out of the gear first.

You may find that the play is caused by a worn keyway in the sector gear and the shaft. I replaced the key with an oversized key. This requires enlarging the keyway on the shaft and the sector gear. I machined mine myself, if you don't have the equipment to do this a machine shop can. This is much cheaper then buying new parts and will probably last longer then you.

the gear box is really simple ! just one gasket and two seals , one or two brass bushings and two bearings BUT you must remove the axel to do it

I need the same thing. One problem I'm having is getting the stupid plug out of the front of the tractor. Anyone have any suggestions. I'm about to give up and live with the play in the steering.
