What are the major differences beetween these models besides 460 being 6 cyl and sheetmetal changes.? Is any better than the other? I looked at some horsepower numbers and they are all about 47-52 horse. I am thinking I would like to restore a gas one, then use it around the farm for planting, pulling gravity wagons, spreading manure, grading exc.

The guys are right that say the 460 is a decendent of the farmall 300, 350 and H. The 560 was a decendent of the 400, 450 and M. It was mentioned that the 460 was a 4 bottom plow tractor, the 560 a 5 bottom plow tractor and the 660 was a 6 bottom tractor. Actually .... this is a little strong. Most 560's pulled 4 bottoms in Iowa - at times it could be a load - they matched up with a JD 730 just right! Neighbor had one of both new from the dealer. 460's pulled 3 or 4 bottoms. Certainly not as fast as the 560 did.

Red and Haas are right. The 460 has the same rearend and transmission as the 300/350. Most 460's had 2 1/2 axles the same as the 300/350 although you could have ordered heavy duty rear axles that were the same as the 400/450 2 3/4. Even with the larger diameter axles the the bull gears, ring and pinion and transmission were still the same as the 300/350. The heavier axles were really only required if your cultivating needs required you to have your wheels out real wide. For PTO work the 460 performed very well. I used a 460 diesel on a corn chopper and it kept right up with a Super M. For durability I would stick with a 400/450

Most arround here have the 2 3/4 axels, lots of corn pickers to be mounted, and the corn picker was the main breaker of the heavy axel.
With a 460 you got smooth 6 power, 12v electrics, a improved dash, better seat, power steering standard, and a work platform thats easier to use.

I don't believe the 460 was in the H line. The 350 was the last in the H line. The 460 was a 4 bottom plow tractor where the M and 400 and 450 were 3 bottom tractors. The 460 was 6 cylinders and can't be compared to the 4 cylinder Ms. The 460 was 4 bottoms the 560 was 5 bottoms and the 660 could be 6 bottoms. Dave Bowers Phx, AZ

For the person that thinks the 460 is a 4 plow tractor and the 450 is a 3 plow tractor, they should read the Nebrasks Tractor Test # 612 (IH450), # 672(IH460) and # 671 for a (IH560). I have a stock 450 gas that puts out 59hp and pulls 4x14 8-10" deep very well in southern Ky. WE had a plow day this year and had approx 90 tractors in the field at once. WE took a movie of it and it soon should be on RFD-TV.

The 460 is a 6 cyl desendant of the H, 300, 350.
The 560 is a 6 cyl desendant of the M, 400, 450.
That's why they had so much trouble with the rear ends. After the problems were fixed, they were good tractors. Many farmers still use them regularly and they give good service.

The 400/450 are descendants of the M. The 460 is a descendant of the H. The 460 is newer, but the 400 and 450 are bigger and heavier than the 460.

My neighbor bought my 460 a few years ago and when he broke the bull gear plowing with 3-16's, he was told that the 400 or 450 bull gears were interchangeable, so that was what was used..Mine had 49 hp ,she didn't like cold weather starts(diesel), but she was a work horse..My 2 cents

It is sad to say but a dairy farm family in my area always ran IH equipment and bought several new 460's in the late fifties. They are somewhat hard on equipment and had a lot of trouble with those tractors. They traded for Deeres and have ran Deeres ever since. I always thought that was a shame and wondere how many other IH fans were lost during that time period.
