Turn the pump up, let her smoke--she loves a good pull!

Sold ours a few years back with 24,000 hours on it. Overhauled around 12k hrs. Had the pump turned up to a little over 100hp. Great lugging power. Love that black smoke! Get ear muffs! One new clutch, original TA, everything still worked. Even the generator. We even used it for the loader for a few years - shifting got really bad, but only the ranges.

24000 hours is a whole lot of hours. 12000 hours before an overhaul is incredible. Always knew those 361 and 407 engines were hard to beat. I personaly think they are better than the newer wet sleeved 414,436 and 466 engines.

I tell ya what, non-turbo engines just seem to last longer. My girlfriend's dad has a 2-180 White with a 3208 Cat non-turbo and he went 12k hours before overhaul also. In comparison, our 1086 only went 7000 hrs and was shot, our 1460 combine with the DT 436 has 2400 hrs and is on its last leg also.

In it's day (up to the introduction of the 1206) the 806 was the world's most powerful row crop tractor. I remember the ads in the early sixties stating this. The last version was rated at 100 pto hp. We had several o6 tractors but never an 806. We had the larger 1206 and it had to be one of the best tractors ever built. The drawback to the 06 series was the shifting. Other than that the 361 diesel in the 1206 was unbeatable, as was the newer 407 in the 1256 we had.

the 806 is a great tractor. we've got 2 diesels that are still going strong. the one, which my grandfather bought new in '64, hasn't had any major engine work at all- never had the oil pan or the head off, has at least 5000 hrs. on it (but who knows, since the tach has been replaced at least once, and no one bothered to keep track of the total), and still runs as good as any other. the one major weakness in the 806 is the trans. linkage, which would wear after a few years, making egg-shaped holes, so you'd really have to slam the shifter around (mostly the range trans., i think), and just get worse and worse. we solved the problem probably back in the late 80's by replacing the linkage with the 856 style, which would look out of place if you're used to the original, but it works without all those problems.
if you woould like further explanation, or just want to chat 806s, drop me an email. spudzooka@juno.com

Well Chris, You have just made a wise purchase. I have an 806D and I use it to ranch with and it is awesome. It pulls a vermeer 506 bailer like a toy, 10 pt chisel like a toy, 7 shank pasture renovator like a toy. It has cost me very little since I got it. Mine probably has 15000 hours or more(tack was broken when I got it) because I got it from a cotton farmer that used the heck out of it. The most posts I see on here bad is about shifting forks and tranny linkage, I have had no trouble SO FAR. Unsure what was done to it before I owned it. Will cross that bridge when get to it. Good Luck.

Chris, I have a early 63' it has a generator, not an alt. also the tack is just that, a tack. it doesn't show speed in each gear, also it has 16.9x38 tires not 18.4x34 so this will tell you if it is an early one also you can tell what yr. by checking the serial numbers. Mine is GAS so it uses about 5 gal. per hour pulling a plow. At least gas around has dropped to just over a dollar. You will like the tractor. and Huh? What? yea I use ear plugs BUT they told us ol' boys too late,
