I was really excited about this Hydro 100 I bought this week. The tractor looks O.K. overall (could use a paint job and has a couple leaks on the loader's hydraulics). My dissapointment comes from its pulling power. I was moving some hay on a bale wagon when I tried to go up a small hill. I could't believe that I barely made it up that hill. Is it a transmission problem or engine? If it is a transmission problem; How long can I drive that tractor like that? Is it something that a novice could tackle ( As I am pretty new at fixing tractors)?

Thanks in advance for your advise!!
Paschal

I just bought one this summer and had the same problem.
THE HYDRO TRACTORS ARE FANTASTIC TRACTORS!!!
when working properly, you can kill the engine by pressing on the brake pedals. it will give back pressure when going down hill, or "gearing back" to slow down. they are every bit as solid as a mechanical drive.
don't waste your time working on it yourself, take it to a shop with someone who has worked on hydros before. they'll do pressure tests to make sure which section is the problem. many problems will be able to be fixed without breaking tractor in half.
mine is actually stil in the shop, but mine didn't have a bad hydro, just some bad (and some wrong parts) seals inside which lowered the hydro pressures, and i could not spin the wheels.
always use IH hydro oil for the trany. some off brand oils WILL destroy some of the seals inside the trany.
use low range whenever possible, it improves oil flow inside the hydro, therefore better for the hydro unit.
keep the oil clean!!! and change it when it is time to be changed!!!!
if properly maintained, they will last MANY MANY YEARS.

That is what one nver knows about used. could be motor could be the hydro could be as one said need to learn a little about using it. If that tractor is in good shape it will handle a good load you have to match the engine to the load it will not pull as much in high range as low if you think the hydro is not as good as it should be you need a flow rater to determen what it needs for repair maney times just a charge pump if the filter and oil have been kept clean they last a long time. my brother never thought he would like one till he got one then he wondered why he never got one sooner his son was the same way They had a turbo on there 100 set at 140HP to back up the 1086. it may cost more to fix but they are a good tractor.

Dad had a Hydro 656 back in the 70s, when pulling a load run the motor wide open and use low range. High range will always act wimpy, been nice if these had come with 3 ranges instead of 2.

first have you ever driven a hydro before? you must move lever to keep engine in it,s power curve-- not just place it in one position and leave it, once you learn how to drive it you will love it,certanally you can place the lever in the full position and overload the motor with to mutch of a load,it would be no diffrent than operating a cub-cadet with a hydro you have to learn to match the hydro to engine rpm,s.
