I have a TD-9 (same engine as WD9) that refuses to start on gas. I went through the carb. and it's getting gas, it has spark, valves & linkages are working, but it doesn't give any indication that it's firing. It does puff some smoke as it's cranked over. I can pull-start it on diesel and it runs fine on diesel. It started good on gas until two years ago, when I had a small gas line fire that burned up the wiring and distributor cap. Since I replaced all that it hasn't worked. Does it seam like a timing problem in the distributor? I'd appreciate anyone's comments or suggestions, since it's tough to find anyone around anymore that has worked on these things.

Loren I have a machine that was doing the same thing to me, but I was lucky that it didn't take me a lot of time to figure the problem. There is a butterfly on the intake manifold that when you put it on gasoline it closes the butterfly so that it could create vacum for the carb and gas fumes flow into the intake. If the butterflies dont close completely there will be no vacum, therefore there will be very little fumes into the cylinders. Please let me know whether this could help or not.

I've got a TD 15 with the same symptoms. The switch over damper seems to be closing but the pile of junk still won't start. Is there anything that I might check on the carb? Thanks, J

I have two of the beasts and soon soon to get #3.

I have had spark and all seem to go the same and one puff and that was it. In this case what we found it out to be was the condenser. It was randomly putting out hard enough spark.

One one other tractor we had troubles with the compression valves sticking and so we removed the top valve cover and freed them up and it worked just fine.

Check your plugs, They are easy to crack and the tips are notorious for not wanting to connect properly.

you stated that you reaced the dist. cap. Are you sure you have the wires in the correct location and proper the firing order?

Had the same type of problem with mine a year or so ago! Ran the full tune up proceedure, and still would not start. Mine did end up being the timing, evidentely I had bumped the dist. at some time and moved it enough for it not to fire properly. As for finding the proper timing, I didn't have a manual so I got as close to TDC as possible,( mine has no pointer) lined up the rotor with the #1 wire on the cap. and she started firing when I hit the button. Then I just warmed her up and set the timing to the highest smoothest RPM I could get. Fiers right up now everytime. Good luck and hope this helps.

Billy,

When you set the timing, did you happen to notice how much play there was on the rotor? When I took off the dist. cap, I noticed that I can move the rotor several degrees both ways. I'm not sure if this is normal, due to advance cams in the distributor, or if the rotor should stay stationary. I don't recall this much free movement on other IH distibutors (on H & M Farmalls). Thanks for your response. At least I have some reassurance that I'm on the right track.
