JD 555 ?????

A neighbor has a 555 that tracks on one side suddenly quite pulling. Anyone have idea where to start looking? Possibly steering clutch???? Thanks,Jim

I can be reached at 440-352-1954 between 7-9 pm [evenings] eastern time. The access plug to get to the set screw is a 1/2" drive plug directly above the final drive. [the big casting where the sprocket is bolted]. This plug is on an angle in the center [ not the one straight out]. If you turn the sprocket with a pry bar, look into the plug opening for the set screw. It's there unless it fell out. You might have to drain a few gallons of oil out for a good look at it..

I'll bet the set screw on the brake drum wasn't installed right, causing the drum to move over and wear a hole in the hydraulic hose that powers the steering clutch.. Happens quite often when the last technician didn't hold his tongue just right while installing set screw....

Roy,he said he had final drive off on side that quit but didn't touch steering brake.Can it be hyd. related? I looked at his JD tech. manual but ag. tractors is all I'm familiar with and it's been nearly 20 yrs. since I worked as a service mngr.Thanks for any help,Jim

Kinda tough to remove final drive without removing set screw, whether or not brake was messed with.. You have to remove upper shaft to remove final drive. To do so the set screw must be removed. Or force it off, I guess anything is possible.....To install the set screw , Line up the set screw with the plug that sits on an angle directly above the final drive housing. I use a 3/8" bolt with appropriate washers to space drum in the center of the upper shaft opening , without encroaching in on the splines. Once the upper shaft is inserted remove the 3/8 bolt and tap lightly on the shaft till you can see a flat area on spline thru thread hole. Run the set screw in till you see the shaft or drum move in or out till it bottoms out. I like to " snug it up " then back it off slightly, then tighten nut down..

That's true for a 450C, too... I had to replace that hose TWICE in one day, before I learned that there is a certain spot on the shaft that the set screw has to seat on - flat or detent, I can't remember, but I do remember the drum WILL slide over, no matter how tight the set screw is, if it is in the wrong place.

I am the furthest thing from an expert or mechanic but I was told that the older John Deere Crawlers were notorious for their short life steering clutches. Apparently the older models always needed readjusting. Like I said, thats just what I was told by a fellow older than myself. If I had to guess I would start poking around the steering clutches. I am sure someone else on here is more useful than I.
