I'd like to communicate with someone that has a Deere 1010 gas engine crawler-loader. I'd like to compare the performance of mine with someone else's. I'm trying to determine is it's not putting out the power it should, or they were all as bad as this one. I was a Deere mechanic for a long time, but I simply don't remember - so I'd like to talk to someone who currently owns or uses one. John Deere 1010 and 350 loaders were VERY underpowered - that much I remember. 1010 gas engine (115 c.i.) is just about the same size as a 420 two cylinder (113 c.i.), just has four little cylinders insead of two big ones. But, I'm not sure if I ever had the occasion to run one on very steep ground before. I live on the side of a mountain, everywhere I go is steep down, or steep uphill. This 1010 crawler, although the engine runs smooth and sounds perfect, and is not running lean, does not have enough power to climb a steep hill in first gear - just lacks horsepower. It will roll easy, so I can't believe it's mechanical drag. And I don't mean pushing or scooping dirt while going uphill - just driving in first gear with the loader bucket up. Just acts like the engine is too small for the machine it's in.

I have a 1010 with a diesel engine,I travel around in third gear,do most of my work in second gear and heavy work in first.
I have more problem with spinning tracks than lack of power.
I think your governor is stuck from lack of use"rusty linkage" or disconnected"broken".
the 1010 is a small crawler and is limited to what it will do.
I ran a case 1150 for a week and saw what twice the weight and power would do.
The 1010 is a "finish" dozer not a tree pusher or pond digger.
get a large cat for heavy clearing, saves alot of time, swearing and final drives!!!

Jdemaris,
I've run a couple over the years, and to say I was underwhelmed is simply not enough. Both were low-hour machines (one was one-owner), started instantly, ran VERY well, hydraulics were as new, etc. (Both were loaders). You couldn't load the bucket full, even in loose dirt or gravel. It wouldn't pick up more than about 1/3-1/2 a bucket without killing the motor. You couldn't doze more than about 1/2 a bucketful of dirt ahead of it. To top it off, this was all on flat ground.

I have an AC HD3 loader. Before I rebuilt it, it used 2 quarts of oil every hour, and the injector pump would barely start it and keep it running. I could still move more dirt in less time with it than my friend's good running 1010 gasser. I couldn't believe that there could be that much difference in brands. Made me wonder how John Deere ever sold one - or got repeat business.

Just my opinion. But as my friend told me about his - when he bought it new, it beat the hell out of loading creek gravel with a shovel.

Good luck,
Dale

I remember close to the same experience with the 350 crawler loaders, but don't recall ever running a 1010 loader. The 350s were so underpowered it just didn't make any sense that someone would build it. In regard to the ACs, I've got a bunch of them and love them. I've got two HD4s, an HD5, and HD6.
