Friends newly purchased 310F(Gas)is having problems starting. Checking we found it has starter/solenoid stamped as 24V but the system has a 12V battery. Can someone advise if it should be a 12 or 24 system as well as any other nice to know electrical information.

Your system should be 12 volts. There are occasions that you can install two 12 volt batteries in series to provide 24 volts for a starter of this class. This can be an advantage if you use a voltage isolation system to seperate the batteries on a 12 volt charging system. For the common installation, I would go for a 12 volt charging system, dual batteries, 12 volt starter and a cross-over switch to series the batteries to the starter in case the batteries run low, or to give a hot 24 volt shot to the batteries in cold weather starting. Keep an ear to the starter rpm so as not to over rev and throw the windings out of the armature.
