Going to look at a '73 Case 350 track loader this weekend. Owner say it runs good but uses some oil. Torque converter has been rebuilt. From posts I have read, most comment that the brakes will probably be shot. Anything else I should look over carefully, besides the U/C. Owner claims he is the second owner and has had it about 8 years. I am looking to clear some land/brush around where our house is being built. I may want to use it to dig and move a little dirt, but mainly clear brush and tree's up to 4". It has the 188 CID engine. Is this machine going to be large enough for that, or should I wait for a 450? Asking price is $5k, does that sound reasonable?

I'd buy the dozer instead of renting. If you rent you are charged for any damage to he paint. If you own your own dozer? It's always there when you need it. My old Case 310 rests a lot more than it works. But when I get one of my trucks or my skidsteer loader stuck. I fire up the crawler.

Buy the dozer amd you'll never have nothing to do again.

I had a friend that had one of these machines and I believe he sold it for $3000. It was gas and was very difficult to operate with very little power. If this is going to be a weekend type of project or short term, my recommendation is to rent a newer model machine such as a John Deere 450H,550H or CAT D4G, D5G. These newer machines are very easy to operate and will get the job done in 1/10th the time. Plus, if something breaks, they bring you another machine. Buying an old machine like this sometimes turns into a money pit and you never get the work done you wanted to.

If you have additional time such as a month, the long term leases become very attractive. Your operating cost/hourly rate goes way down to as low as $16 per hour for a very nice machine. Believe me, there is a lot of difference between a day on an older machine and a day on a newer machine. Not just in what you have accomplished but in how you feel physically.

Go to a rental yard and run a new machine for a few minutes and then go run the Case. Imagine this for 8 hours or more and then make your decision.

The other issue is after you have bought the Case and you are finished with it, you then have to find a buyer for it. If you have put another $5000 into it to keep it running, you still have a $5000 machine. $5000 will buy you a lot of rental time without the headaches.

Just some considerations....

Good Luck on your decision!!

I have thought about renting and have rented skidsteer's and small backhoe loaders. I don't know of a rental place nearby that has larger loaders though. I will do some looking around. I have a small farm of about 110 acres and I can think of numerous projects and it just seems handier to have the machine here. But when you think about it, you can rent a lot of hours for the money. Thanks for the advice.

John ,

5,000 dollars will not but many hours if you

consider the pick up and delivery charges and it

will never be there when you want to move something.

Seems like kirby never ran a case or he wouldn't

tout JD so much.

350 is a good little tractor , but if you are

not in a hurry wait on a 450. All the tractors

that case built had plenty of hp for their size.

Sorry George, I've got about 2000 hours on a Case 855 with a 4-1 bucket. And I own a new 85XT skid steer with a tree shear and grappler bucket. Case is a fine product however if you go to any rental yard, you'll find John Deere's and not any Case's. That's why the JD was mentioned in my response.

After I posted my message, I realized that my friends machine was a Case 310 not a 350. It probably was a 60's era machine.

Again, good luck on your decision.
