Case 480C

Gentlemen; I'm trying to remove the input shaft from a Case 480C backhoe in order to repair some damaged bearings and need some advice. Does the input shaft remove out of the front of the transmission or out the back. I think I have removed all the snap rings on the shaft; however, I still can't get the shaft to move forward.

Yep, you're missing someting. I've only had a coulpe of those transaxles apart and that was a few years ago- used to work at a Case construction dealer. As I recall, there's a special tool that you'll need to get or make that's used as a spacer. It's hard to describe what it looks like, so I'll describe how to make it: If you'd get a piece of pipe with an ID the same as the diameter of the input shaft, and with a 1/4" thick wall. Cut a length of that pipe about an inch long, then cut that in half length-wise so that you have a half-round section of pipe. Weld on a bolt or rod in the middle of the outside maybe 5" long, just to hold it while you tap on the shaft. Now like I said, it's been a long time, but this'll give you a place to start. If I remember right, first you tap the shaft foreward as far as it'll go. This will press the rear bearing cone part way off the shaft and give you room to slide gears and hubs and stuff on the shaft. Then you pry and/or tap on the gears until you get a space on the shaft that you can put the tool onto- I think it goes between the #2 and #3 gears, but I don't remember for sure, and it should work anywhere that it'll fit. Anyway, this spacer allows you to tap on the shaft some more and then you can knock the shaft the rest of the way out of the rear bearing. Once you get that bearing cone off, you can work the whole shaft assembly out of there- it isn't easy as I recall, but it'll fit. Hope this helps, and I hate to say it, but if my memory isn't adequate here you might have to resort to a manual. And for god sakes be careful what you put in the brake master cylinders... I think a 480c takes DOT 3, but check before you pour! Case switched back and forth at least twice on different backhoe models, and they even have a few series 3 580K's out that say DOT 3 on the brake reservior, but are supposed to take hydraulic oil and will have major problems if a body adds DOT 3... so be careful. It's unreal how many brake systems I fixed due to this.
