Looking for any and all suggestions here. Have a 3208 CAT in an AG tractor. Was using oil, otherwise running ok. Decided to overhaul. New .020 over pistons, .010 under crank, valves ground, Injection pump & injectors overhauled by CAT. All original parts installed except pistons and brgs. (same crank, same heads etc.) Now.....Starts hard, runs rough for 1st 10-15 min. White/gray smoke Unburned fuel. With exhaust manifolds removed, cyls. 1-7 are wet with fuel. #8 is the only one burning clean and dry. Checked compression on all 8. result...260 lbs. on all. Checked timing about 6 times. Reset timing about 4 times. (Timing never changed just wanted to be sure.)Checked for bad camshaft. Checked valve adjustment. Thought maybe I got wrong pistons. Matched new and old thoroughly, checking volume of crater and all. Seem to be exact match. Had CAT recheck pump and injectors. Tested OK again. Why one good cyl. and 7 poor. Of course I've already been through filters, air in system and all the normal "first things to look for". Now what????

You say you have 260 lbs. compression? What is the compression supposed to be?

perform a flow timing procedure to eliminate any possible timing mistakes. I have seen engines not run correctly when pin timed but run corectly when flow timed ( something not machined correctly)

Steve, this might sound stupid but are all the pistons installed the same way(crater under the injector). Even the factory has done this wrong. You can check this by pulling the injectors and pushing an unsharpened lead pencil down onto the piston top and looking for the indent of the center of the crater in the pencil end. The engine will run with them in wrong but not as well.

Well I have thought of this. However I am the one that installed them to begin with and I'm 99% sure they are correct. I can see maybe making a mistake on 1..... ..but 7? If so..... I'd better quit this line of work. I will have to double check it though. Thanks!

I told you it would sound stupid Steve but when you have went over everything else it's time to look for odd things. I remember this from a service magazine 25 yrs ago reguarding some factory rebuilds. And another time I again heard of it was in a new 943 or 53 that was low on power. It almost sounds like timing but you have checked and rechecked that,it's some oddball thing.

I tried advancing and retarding and found the "happy medium" where it seems to start the best and smoke the least. But it's still not right.

Did you replace the mechanical advance wheel? If the springs are broken the position will change all the time. Don't buy Cat. I.P.D. sells them for one third the cost.
