Can a Cat with 2F serial number be anything other than a 22?

I'm looking a a cat crawler that is disassembled and scattered about and the owner swears it's a fifteen but the serial number on the chassis starts with 2F. From what I know that makes it a 22 doesn't it.

Do the early 22's not have the gauges on the gas tank or the auxillary gas tank?

Thanks, Jeff

Jeff, My s/n books shows the model 22 as a 2F-1 thru 2F-9999 from 1934 - 1939 and The model 22 1J-1 thru 1J-5155 from 1938 thru 1939,

Hi, Jeff. As I understand it, and I could be wrong, ALL Cat 22's were either 2F or 1J series.
The Cat 15's had 3 series, PV, 7C (standard version) and 1D (high clearance). So it sounds like that little jigger is NOT a 15.
Also, I believe all the 22's had a large 'rounded' oblong fuel tank in front of the driver acting as both firewall and rear hood support. This tank was for kerosene and it had a small cylindrical tank built into it high on the right side for gasoline for starting. This gasoline tank had a rear facing filler spout that came out of the tank horizontally and curved up to the cap.
I've never seen a fuel guage on a Cat 22 but I also never saw a 1J, although I operated several 2F's in my youth.
Hope this helps.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Jeff
a 15 & 22 can use the same trans. Best way for you is a 15 is a flathead and a 22 is not. 22 has 2 gas tanks and a 15 has 1. The 2 easy checks

Bruce, I didn't get a look at the engine. Do any of the fifteens have a gas tank on the fire wall that's shaped like a 22's? I thought the fifteen's gas tank is long and under the hood above the engine?

Bruce, Would a 22 trans fit in a small 15 (7c) if someone had swaped it?

Hi, Jeff. I'm no expert but I doubt that a 7C 15 would take a 22 trans without some fairly serious modification. As I understand it from Eric Orlemann's Caterpillar Chronicle, the 7C and 1D 15's were designed to replace the earlier PT series Cat 10 (The 1D was the high-clearance version.) and were noticebly smaller than the 22 which was introduced in 1934, 2 years after the 15's ceased production.
Hope this helps.
