Just bought a case 450 crawler loader, seems to be real good but has no brakes, any ideas what to check first? Thanks

Get ready to stand on your head for a while. Most likely the problem will be the slave cylinders on the brakes and then you will have to pull the housings to clean out the muck from inside the brakes, if they're in there. I've pulled apart inop brakes where someone had completely removed them. Like one of the other posters suggested, it might make sense to evaluate how important the brakes would be for if the machine will be sitting idle alot, then the brakes won't be operating for long anyway. If you do decide to rebuild, its a good idea to to replace the return springs and the ball bearings when you replace the discs. Reason for this is that the brakes normally produced more heat than stopping power so the springs lost their pull and the ball bearings would start flaking off material. Good luck for I wasn't ever enthused about working on the brakes on those 450 loaders due to the area inwhich you had to work. I tried working from below but didn't like eating all of the dirt and oil.

I posted a similar question a while ago. Look back through the archives and you will see some good advice. Since we use our 450 on the farm we chose not to repair the brakes. If you have cutting teeth on the bucket you can stop pretty darn fast that way. Also easy to stop by just lowering the bucket to the ground and dragging some. All but one of the early 450s I know about do not have brakes. By and by, you learn to operate safely without them.

You bought one heck of a good machine. Ours have given us countless hours of good service. Keep the fuel filters changed frequently. That has been my only real trouble, and I caused that.
Good luck to you and congrats- Mike D.

This old 450 dozer we have here has a master cylinder for each side down under the floorboard, I think later models have went to using a spool in the trans. valve to apply brakes.
