Need some advice. Want to change the oil in the powershuttle on my backhoe. Manual describes a "special tool" I need to buy to turn flywheel to get to bolt on bottom of torque converter.

Question; Is there a different method (safe method) of turning flywheel to get the same results without this tool???

Thanks for all your responses.

Tom

Thanks for your feedback. I think I'll try the screwdriver method first and see what I can do with that.

While I'm doing this I will be removing pan and suction screen etc. If I'm going thru this trouble may as well do it up right.

THANKS AGAIN!

Tom

HI Tom, is this the same tool also used to bring the engine up to TDC for setting the valves? I picked a couple up from a cummings dealer for a dodge pickup & a 580K a few years ago, if I recall corectly they were under thirty dollars each.

The special tool that I had always used was a large flat bladed screwdriver between the block and then turn the flywheel with the starter ring gear. Its slow but then your not up and down checking all the time. Its also safer than bumping the starter.

I would also remove shuttle oil pan and clean screen, or better yet replace the screen.

Most modest size engines can be turned over by pushing in on the fan belt with one hand (to increase belt friction), and pushing on a fan blade with the other. I was able to check the fuel injection timing on my John Deere backhoe this way. Alternatively, you may be able to get a wrench on the bolt securing the alternator pulley or crankshaft pulley.

You will have to decide for yourself if there is a safety hazard involved in slowly turning over a shut-down Diesel engine with your two hands.
