I have had a late 80's case backhoe for a couple of years now and it has been great in all aspects. However, just lately, i have been having some trouble with starting it. as you probably know -there is a neutral switch that does not allow you to start it while in gear. The problem is a bit abstract in that we have replaced the ignition switch and the neutral switch and still, when you turn the key all the way to "start" position, sometimes it just starts up, but other times it does nothing.(like there is no connection). once we had the key in the start position fora whole minute and all of the sudden, something made a connection, and the starter started spinning and it started, it does make a little noise when nothing happens (very quiet and deffinately not the starter)-it is very frustrating and i would very much appreciate any ideas or feedback -thanks,
Brian

Like Bud I'm not sure how your starter is wired. You might try putting the key in the start position and checking the post on the starter solenoid to see if the power is making it down there. If you have no power, then simply start tracing wires back til you find the problem. If you do have power on the small post(power from the key) then check the big post connected back to the starter (you should have one post hot to the battery, and the other swiched through the solenoid to the starter). If you don't have power there, then you have a bad solenoid. The noise your hearing would be the bendix kicking out but if the contact plates inside the back of the solenoid it are corroded (eaten up from arcing together), then even though it kicks in and engages the flywheel, and brings the contacts together, the current can't flow through to the starter to make it turn. It's a really common problem, and it's one that comes and gos just like your describing. Good luck.

Not sure how close the wiring is to my 580C, but I've had a problem like that that was caused by a bad circuit breaker mounted on the side of the engine near the starter. If you don't have a service manual the problem may be hard to find. Mike Griffith (McBean1254@aol.com) has new and used manuals for a good price and is great to deal with.

You've probbaly already have been here,

A poor contact connection where the battery grounds to the frame has been my most common electrical problem/trouble shooting and can give some of these same systoms.
