I posted this on the CASE board as well so if it looks like a duplicate it is except I spelled losing right this time.

I am looking for clues guys. I have an '86 1835b with the 188 diesel. It starts fine and idles fine, when throttle is opened up it will operate properly for a few minutes then bog down to what seems like 3/4 speed and pumps out the blue smoke. When you return to idle it idles fine. Needless to say power leaves as well.

When in this state bucket and lift arm operation doesn't seem to have an effect on engine nor does wheel movement except for the load imposed by moving.

This has happened before and changing the filter corrected the problem ( I can understand how air starving could cause this condition). Now it runs like this even with the intake tube removed. I have changed air and fuel filters and changed the engine oil and filter.

How can I seperate wether this is an engine problem or a hydraulics draggin the engine down problem?

Any ideas would be welcome. Especially welcome if explanation is included.

Thanks
Chuck

Chuck,
I have the same 1835B and it was doing the same thing you outlined. I changed the fuel fiters, lines and the fuel did not do anything but get me very smelly and dirty! Whats wrong is the injection pump need to be rebuilt. It cost me $765.00 to have it rebuilt and another $350.00 to have it installed. 1,100.00 bucks later.....it runs great! Hope this helps, dont waste your time with all the other fixes, its the injection pump.

Chuck, Symptoms sound like restricted fuel return ,most likely the housing pressure regulator. In the return line at the pump there is a fitting , remove and look thru it at bright light . If there is a fuzzy shadow around the glass ball or the ball is not easily depressed with pick , you have found the problem . the cure is to put kit in inj pump because the governor drive ring is disintegrating , if you fail to replace ring the mating parts will wear the heads off of the rivots and when this happens you have no governor to limit rpm . The sky is then the limit . One more test before condeming regulator , remove regulator and with small pin punch knock out the ball and spring , reinstall fitting , if engine performs properly , rebuild inj pump and replace regulator . it will run without ball in fitting to get you home but do not continue to run , as that is when it will cut off the rivots .

Have you checked the flow of fuel?

First of all was there water in the fuel? Have you tried diesel conditioner? Has fuel pump been bled? Sounds to me like a fuel or pump problem. Hydrual;ics have no bearing. If all else fails take off the pump and do a thoruogh cleaning check and calibrate. If all else fails get a case of cheap beer and throw the empty bottles at it while wishing you'd bought a John deere. later-charlie

But what I can't understand (not all that hard to do admittedly) is why does the shortage of fuel cause the blue smoke ie. burning oil?

Blue smoke on a diesel engine dont always mean oil being burned. Incomplete combustion will cause Blue Fuel smoke. I always say its its smoking blue and smells like fuel, its fuel smoke. To much incomplete combustion and its whitesh blue, Its just like pouring diesel fuel on a brush pile thats just warm coals. It is mostly white but some blue mixed in. No more than A Injector spits it shows blue.
