Case 188 diesel problem.

We have a 450 loader. It is blowing oil out of the breather element nipple on top of the valve cover. It has plenty of power, and starts good. I have had people tell me that it needs oil rings. Others have suggested that it has a bent valve.
An old timer recently told me that there is a crankcase breather tube somewhere on it. He said that was the plugged up. Any suggestions?

Can't do a rebuild any time soon. It runs good anyway. Just spits out a lot of oil. We have a hose temporarily rigged up to pass the oil down beneath the machine to keep oil off the engine. The loader is used around the farm so it does not get a lot of use. When it is used we don't run it for more than a 1/2 day at a time. It has been a strong machine for its weight. No other problems to speak of. Never any steering problems. Have spun off a track a time or two, but that is to be expected. We are very happy with our old Case, but would like to get this oil problem figured out.

Any suggestions from you Case fans?

Maybe only needs a fair amount of hardish work to solve the oil blowing-problem. It will possibly glaze the bores and blow by while only doing light work. However, it shouldn't be leaking onto the top of the engine in any case (pardon the pun). You don't say how much oil is being blown out. A small amount will make a big mess all down the side of the engine. You could try a 'running-in' oil for a while if it is glazed.

I cant think of any other breather this engine has except for the one your talking about, a bent valve would have nothing to do with it, also would run like crap, and oil rings wont help it either, you need compression rings these are what control blow-by all engines have some blow-by and as an engine wears it gets to be more and finally it gets to be enough to start carrying oil out the vent tube with it, rings and liners will fix it but if you can put up with loosing oil run it till you cant stand it anymore. My opinion, others may (and probably will) vary.

check your breather tube it comes of the valve cover and a rubber hose goes down the side of the engine if there is a lot of dirt under engine in the fram it will plug the hose best is to clean under the engine any way this helps the oil pan from getting wore out from rust and rub holes from stones

Probably needs sleeves and pistons. Maybe the first signs of something worse. Maybe broken ring(s). Time will tell.
