Has anyone had experience with boring wet sleeves. I want to bore my sleeves from 4 1/2" to 4 3/4". Any special tips you could provide will help. How to hold them in place also is another problem.

One way this could be done even if they are hard is to rough bore on a lathe. Then finsh on an ID grinder, You could use a mag chuck to avoid distortion. I can't believe this would be cheaper than buying new.

Jere, you aren't talking about Cat liners are you? They are hardned steel not castiron. They can be deglazed but I don't think you could bore them and make a good job of it.

Jere,

Depends on the wall thickness whether you can bore it , I bore wet sleeves quite often, but not for oversize. I bore sleeves to repair the surface, I bore and install a dry liner in the wet sleeve , works great for the ones that you can't buy parts for. Mostly do waukesha 190 DLC , the 190 DLB you can still buy parts for , also do the J series cont'l , JD 382 and JD 403 . george

you didnt specify what engine your wanting to bore. it is possible to get overbore sleves. i dont think you can bore a sleve, the walls would be too thin and burn up.

My TD-35 has 4 1/2" bore sleeves. There is adequate material to bore to 4 3/4" as the block was designed for either sleeve. I am hoping that the boring cost is cheaper than buying new sleeves-that is, if I could even find new sleeves. TD-14 sleeves & pistons will interchange with my engine. Does anyone have a set of main bearings .030 undersize for a TD-14??? They are almost impossible to find. Thanks, Jere

A the risk of talking about a specific engine I haven't worked with, be sure about the sleeve wall thickness. While a block may be designed for either sleeve the sleeve may not be designed for boring. For example, the sleeve may only be hardened a few 1000ths. Working on a DT 466 now that has oversize sleeves available but they don't bore well. Guy that fixed it before tried to bore them and made a real mess of things, had a sleeve shatter under load, ripped a piston, and twisted the crank. He spent 3500 getting it done half way when 4500 would have done it right.

Suggest talking to a good machine shop and see if they can get you sleeves and bearings. There's a really good one I use, email me if you need the #.
