About 1350 hrs. ago we did a major on the 504 in my case. Line bored the block, new crank .010 rods and .010 mains, new pistons and liners, sized the rods, took all sending units and plugs out and blew steam though all oil passages, rebuilt heads, had the crank checked for straightness, hardness as well as cracks. Used only genuine Case parts and all machine work was done by a time proven shop. Last week a knock developed and found to be a broken crank. She broke between the #6 rod and the rear main. Checked the torque on all rods and mains and found them to be at spec.Flywheel was tight and the torque converter bolts were tight as well. What in the world would have caused this? Thanks, David

I talked to the case shop foreman and he said that they wont even put a crank in that is turned past .010, as they wont last any time. Mine was turned .030 R&M and he said without a doubt that was what caused the breakage.A new one is $4200 from the dealer, does anyone know of a good after market source for cranks for the 504? My bearings looked perfect and she still had 60 psi of oil pressure.Dont want a rebuilt one due to the heat and gringing required in the rebuilding process. Any hellp is appreicated. The case dealer ask is I had the cummins or the case engine. What series cummins engine did they come with and or parts any more avaible/cheaper than for the 504? Thanks, David

If you have no bearing damage I would be inclined to agree with AJ's comment about vibration or something off balance, over revving?.its a shame after all the effort you put in to have this happen but you will have to find the reason before you fit a new shaft, that's if it has not damaged the block, frozen PTO shafts joints are often the culprit.

In my experience (opinion) the crankshaft on the 6 cyl. Case engines is the weak link I have built several and in at least half of the times had to replace crankshaft due to being warped or cracked, I think if it was anything other than just a weak crank it would have shown up before 1350 hrs.

Vibration is the most likely cause of crank failure, loose engine, worn mountings etc

If it broke at 1350 hours I doubt that the machine shop is to blame. A bad radius grind will show up quickly on a 504 engine. How did your bearings look? A typical failure would be for a) low oil pressure to develop. b) the rear bearings seize (as they are the farthest from the oil pump the pressure there is lowest). c) the seized bearing causes the crank to heat, crack and then break. Did you replace the oil pump at time of build? Also, at 1350 hours, it could be a freak failure.

Hi David
If It broke at the junction of the bearing surface and the cheek they might not have ground the proper radius when the did the crankshaft grind
