refering to my previous message, pulled the heads off the engine today and the pistons and cylynder walls look very good. No cracks on the pistons, and no scoring, grooves or discoloration on the walls. If I pour some light oil on top of the pistons, i don't get any leakage down. The very back piston seemed to have a lot of oil on top of the piston, and it looks like the headgasket could have failed between one of the oil holes and that combustion chamber. Could that have caused the blow by? Should there be any play at all in the pistons from side to side? When they are at the top of the stroke. there is a slight amount of play in them, but there is none if they are any place else in the stroke. Also, the valves look like new, no burning, buildup, ect. Anyway, any suggestions where i can pick up a rebuild kit with pistons, rings and sleeves if i decide to keep tearing it down? This is not a high use machine and i'd prefer to go aftermarket instead of genuine case to keep the costs down.

Two things will cause blowby, worn sleeves and/or rings. The tolerance for the sleeves is .006 from top to bottom, you may be able to check this with the pistons installed but pay close attention to the power side of the sleeve since this is the area for the most wear. Whe you first noticed this problem, did you ever try turning the engine over by hand? I once went out on a service call on a hard to start 1150. It turned out that the engines was so bad that I could turn the engine over using the fan blade by nit holding the fan belt against the pulley and the belt was loose. After I squirted some engine oil in the cylinders, the engine would start and ran fine, except for some blue smoke and blowby.

Mike,

Unless you want to be skinned on your first

phone call , I would call all the other yards

first, and go to wengers as the last resort.

Their prices start at 50 % of current list price

regardless of condition . Also they now strip

and shelf all their parts , that way they loose

all the little parts ( bolts ,pins special nuts,

etc ). I have known Carl for 35 years , it used

to be a good yard .

Yes a blown headgasket to an oil drain down port (i.e. push rod hole) would put compression in the oil pan and would also let the engine suck oil in the cylinder, still seems like you should have had a skip tho or some blue smoke from it burning oil it is normal for the pistons to have some side clearance so a little movement is expected.
