I have a 1978 case 1150B track loader. the engine is a 6cyl 451 cubic inch diesel that up to recently has run strong. the engine has become hard to start and when it does i am getting a huge amount of smoke blowing out of the breather tube. the engine actually seems to be running ok once it starts, no strange knocks or noises, but the blow by through the breather tube is so bad that engine oil is actually dripping out. I did use some starting fluid on the engine a few weeks ago on a cool morning, something i normally don't do, and i'm thinking i might have blown a headgasket, but i'm just guessing. anyone have any ideas?

Usually you will get a dead skip when you blow a head gasket I'm afraid the compression is getting by the rings to have that much blow-by, pull the heads off you will see it.

You have probobly broken the top rings with too much starting fluid. They have woren a groove in the side of the pistion. Time for rebuild.
