After about an hour & 1/2 my 450 Case gets up to about 210- 220 degrees. My back is tired by then too. I shut her down and don't get back on until the temp gauge reads 160 or so.

I keep the radiator fins clean. The fan belt doesn't slip. There is good oil in the engine. The hydraulic fluid level is up. There is plenty of anti-freeze & water in the radiator.

Wondering if you fellows have any advice to share?
The crawler is on a small farm and we are rebuilding 2 pond dams and clearing boundries with it.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hows the tranny temp? It may sound dumb but if mud and/or sticks get caught in the inside rear of the track they will act like a disk brake on the sprocket, thus making the engine work harder than necessary. Has the injection pump been changed? There were different ones that required different static timing like 0º and 8º btdc.

Never thought of that Max. The idea of having drag on the transmission makes sense. I'll keep an eye on any roots and clay that might want to hang on.

The pump was rebuilt before I bought the machine in '97. It didn't run at 220-230 until about 2 years ago. I've been careful to baby it ever since. I am just fooling around with some fencelines, a couple of old pond dams, and clearing a few acres. Then I got to sell it & get on with the rest of our projects. So, I'll keep holding it's hand until I can let her go... and I'll keep my fingers crossed all the while.

Thats a good idea about making sure I'm not hauling around disc brakes. Thank you.

I have a 450 and my manual says that it can run at 230 degrees without doing any damage. That is with a properly operating cooling system. My friends also tell me that if it gets overheated, it will crack the head. Can not tell you what overheated degrees is.

Thanks Ric, My loader sounds like Rice Crispies when it gets up to 230 degrees. I worry about warping the head too. Just going by my gut it seems that I lose power and lift when she gets that hot. Takes a whole lot longer to cool back down then too. Might just be as wore out and old like its owner.

If you are running to lean, you will run very hot.

On my TD7, I had where under full throttle,
it would start to really heat up, then
lose power....(over time)

Finally it went dead...

guess what, fuel filter... :)
