Case 450 Tracks

I am going to have to put new seals in my hydraulic track adjuster. Do you have to break loose the track to take out the adjuster? If so, how do you take the track loose. Is there a master pin? How do you get it out? Any help would be appreciated.

I have never had to split the track to remove an idler or work on an adjuster before, even with new track.If you take out the grease fitting that you pump the track adjuster up with and use a come a long to pull the idler back all the way you should have plenty of room to take the track off without breaking the track.while you have the adjuster out check the piston and bore well as they get rusted and scratched and new seals wont last,if thats the case you will need to replace them or plan on repairing them at least once a year.If its just a tractor you play with at home then you may get by with new seals/packings but if you use it to make money you had better check them well and replace them if they are scratched,rusted or pitted.The Case manual specifies to have the master pin located at the back of the tractor on the lower part of the rear sprocket for removal purposes.Having done it in both positions before, I know why they tell you this,makes the job much easier to do and a lot easier to swing the hammer and believe me you will need all the room you can get to swing the hammer if you have to slpit the track.

Never had to remove the track before, just removed all tension from the adjuster by removing the check valve and prying the adjuster all the way back. Then hook a chain to the top pad above the idler and hook to either the blade or bucket and angle the blade or tilt bucketto pull the slack back out of the chain, remove the four mount bolts and remove the adjuster. Master pins do only go in one way, inside/out with the driving side marked for removal with a dimple which has the smaller diameter. This dimple should be on the outside so you can swing a 20 lb sledge at it easier.

Yep track has to be broke, yours probably does have a master pin it is identifiable by a dimple in the end of the pin, you will need a block of wood, a bar smaller than pin diameter with a handle welded on it, a large sledge hammer, a buddy and quite possibly some heat, locate the pin pull it up to about midway of the front idler, position the block of wood under the cleat of the pad that has the pin in it and pull the machine up against it (depending on the size of the block of wood you chose pin should wind up in about 4 or 5 o'clock position) then whoever has the best aim with the hammer should wail on the bar with a handle you made while the other guy holds the handle, bar assy. against the pin (safety glasses) try a few good licks to see if the pin moves if not under your breath cuss the guy that welded it in there LOL, you do need to check to see if it has been welded if so you'll hafta cut the weld loose, if not welded and still wont move apply heat around pin, dont heat pin this will accelerate mushrooming, once the pin ever moves it should come out fairly easily. the pin can go eather way in is the easiest way. and as fare as the seal this is not the best fix they still like to leak afer you replace them most of the time in the long run replace the hole adjuster it is about 275.00 after market . you will not have fun braking the track did it 2 times one time now i replace the hole adjuster saves a lot of time and money in the long run. for me down time is money. good luck
