I have been told the engine has been changed in this machine.I need to know if the original # is stamped in the frame somewhere? This is supposed to be a mid 50's machine.I would also like to know why the hyd.system and blade arrangement's are not in my oem part's book.

Check the back of the transmission housing, upper left area, the number should be stamped there. (At least it is on the earlier 3J/5J machines, sounds like yours is a 5U series.) As for the parts books, Cat puts everything in a separate book, so the hydraulics will be in one, the bulldozer blade will be in another. I'm no expert on these, if you need more specifics, try posting at the Antique Caterpillar web site.

Try looking on the left rear end of the tractor. My D4-7U has a stamp right in the chassis right next to the funny looking filler plug that protrudes from he case right next to the track. It should start out with your series then SN. If its short you know you have an old one.
