I need some clarification of the type of oils needed for my tractor. I would like to change these out but after reading the manuals I am still a little confused.

What types of oil are needed for bevel gear, transmission, and final drives? Is it gear oil, motor oil, hydraulic fluid etc.? Can I use multiple viscosity oils? I know these are probably stupid questions but don't want to ruin anything. All HELP is appreciated!!!

Thanks
Tom

Tom you need a straight grade 30 oil for the trans and bevelgear, this can go into the steering clutches too if they are the wet type, cat classes it as TO. It will not cause the clutches to slip as 10 W 30 engine oil will. Use the 30 or 50 in the final drives. Your oil supplier should know what to sell you if you tell him this. Watch for metal chips in the oil coming out and on the plug magnet.

Bob:

The landscaping "battle" rages on. Got all the stumps removed in the back yard (finally) and now am doing alot of terracing and leveling. Here in New England have lots of rocks and ledge. But, with the CAT making some short work of it all and of course having a TON OF FUN with the "toys". I will probably have more questions on repair and sutff on the CAT. Have been going thru the manuals and they are a big help. Also, you are a tremendous resource!! Hope some of that expertise rubs off on me.

Talk to ya later,
Tom

P.S. Did check the oil in the finals. Found no metal on the plug, oil was nice and clean with no cloudiness or discoloration. Even the viscosity seemed good.

The clean plugs are a compforting sight Tom. That sound like a bigger job you have there than I thought. It would have cost you the price of the mach's to get someone in and do it, you wouldn't have the fun and likely not got exactly what you had in mind either.

Bob, a little metal on the plug would be normal wouldn't it. I get a bit every time I change the Land Cruiser's gearbox oil, probably the wife being rough on the gears. What would you call a worry ?. Should final drives not have any metal residue ?.

Dave you always get some powder there, looks like a paste (never seize). Large flakes and chips are what I meant.Sorry for the confusion. Bob
