I need to level a building spot, dig basement, make a couple of good size farm ponds, and clear some brush along with thinning some second growth timber for pasture. (on 240 acres of Ozark hills)
Would a crawler loader in the JD 450 size do this or should I hire the work done. I only have experience on farm tractors, but should have a lot of time when I retire in a year or so.

I did the same thing only I bought a D6B. I used mine for about a month and then it broke down. It ended up costing me over $7,000 to fix it right. Just a word of advice. "learn what to expect from your machine from someone that has experience" It may be a bulldozer but if you are trying to break through hardpan or rock, it can sure destroy things like final drives and crown gears quickly

Phil,
If you want another toy, buy the 450 loader and have fun. If you want the work done for the least money, hire a pro to do the work. Not only are they responsible for maintance and repairs, they are also responsible the gas/electrical/etc. line they dig up and they will get three or four times the work done while your learning to run the loader. This said, I bought a 1945 Allis-Chalmers HD-7W but I know it's a toy and I have fun with it. Either operating it or working on it.

buy a crawler! I lived in the ozarks for several years and used a small dozer ac h-3 for building several ponds and cleared several roads, removing tree`s etc.... then sold it for what i paid. So if you dont break it or roll it over, money saved.I now owen a JD350 a 450 should do allmost anything you need to.

I've heard of several fellows who buy a machine, do the work, then sell. You wouldn't have the time constraints and you'd learn a lot. There is additional risks also. One guy I know upended his dozer and had to get it turned back over! That would have cured me.

Thanks for the replies.
You are right about things going wrong. There is a JD 450 in a neighboring state that the farmer got stuck in a creek and it went under water. He said he spent $7000 rebuilding the motor and clutches at the local John Deere dealer a year and a half ago. He is asking $7500. Everything is supposed to be OK but the levelers on the bucket are worn (whatever that is). I think I'll go over and look at it. Wish I knew a little more in what to look for.

look at the undercarrage, just imagine a roller chain on a baler, or other eq, and examine the tracks and rollers. you can easily spot the wear. undercarrage wear is expensive to repair so look at it carefully. a 450 is a really good machine.im looking at a 350 ----- 7500.00 its a pretty good buy . a 450 would be better.

Hi Phil! If you are already a tractor enthusiast, buy the loader. I made the same decision some years ago and ended up falling in love with the tractor. It became a favored past time for me just tinkering with the equipment. In financial terms, if you have the work you describe, it will probably cost several times what the tractor will cost to get it done.
