Hello Fellas,
Sure appreciate all the good advice I received recently about my fuel trouble.

Let me tell you what I did. And also what happened.
I rigged up a temporary fuel tank. It is a 2 gal. plastic paint bucket. I secured it to the top of the ROPS cage. I disconnected the fuel line into the primary filter and plumbed in the temp. fuel line to the line into the primary filter. When I opened the bleed screw on top of the secondary filter fuel shot out of it like a squirt gun. That was exciting. No doubt the rig was getting fuel now... -BUT- It would not start. Even with the either.

It had started and ran for about 30 seconds just 2 weeks earlier. The last it ran I kept it going with either after it became fuel starved. Someone told me that you can wash the cylinder walls free of oil when running on either only. Which is probably what I did. He said that
when that happens you'll lose compression and the engine won't start at all. The way it was explained it made sense. Now what step would I take if that is the case? The same guy said you could spray a little bit of oil into the breather element and when the engine turned over it would recoat the cylinder walls.

I'll have some time this coming weekend to work on it some more. Sure would rather be finishing our fence line project... ALSO: It was mentioned to me in an earlier post that the fuel tank vent could be blocked. I can't seem to find a fuel tank vent anywhere on it. I have tried starting it with the cap off the tank too. If it runs with the 2 gal. temp. tank then I'll work my way back through the system until I find the problem.
Don't have the $ for a mechanic, and sure could use some more advice on this one. Much Obliged- Mike

With a Roosa Master pump there are a few things to check. The return line comes out of the top of the pump governor cover. Disconnect this line. Try and start the engine. Use either or WD40. If engine runs, the return line is blocked. If the return line is blocked, the engine will not run, maybe only for a few seconds. If this doesn't help, take the 3 screws out of the governor cover and lift the cover off. Clean this area first, you don't want any dirt to fall into the pump. Inside you will see the metering valve which has a small spring under it. This metering valve has to be free to move up and down. If it is stuck, no fuel. Spray some WD40 on the valve and make sure it moves up and down freely. Put the cover back one and hope for the best!

Hey Marlowe, Give me some time to get back with him. It will make someone a fine machine I bet. My plate is a little too full to take it on, especially on our stretched shoestring. We never talked price, he just wanted my 450 real bad like... the 500 is near Lynchburg.

you got to get the air out of the injector pump and injectors by bleeding them the pump is the most importent the air will not pump out you have to bleed it manualy. you should stop useing the either to run the engine on make sure you got fuel to the injectors by craking the nut at the injector if you don't fuel have at the injector you have air in the pump

Thanks yet again Marlowe, Hope to spend some time on it this weekend. May have to get the genset out and hook up the lights. Daylight will have to go to the fence post auger, and cutting more posts. Sure will be nice to hear that 188 fire off again. I've completely abandoned the idea of the proposed swap with the Massey 500. Way out of my league. If it takes a dump I'd own a 19 ton farm ornament. Don't need that on my mind. I'm going to clear the air out of the pump and injectors. I'll give the either a rest too.

About your 450 another problem with the old 188s
where camshaft problems.
But the roosamaster pumps are not an easy pump to bleed.
Make sure that all your fuel filters are free of water. The one sure thing is to check for smoke as you crank it over make sure you do as the other fellow said but do it to all four injectors at the nozzles. You will need good set of batteries to do this.
Either is a no no on any diesel engine if it can be helped. It is as twice as hard on them,it can break the piston rings & pound them right on top of the second ring which just does a whole alot of damage
If you do get it running ? check for colour of smoke from the exhaust should be a clear hase coming out of the muffler Hope this can help you
