I just bought a JD 40C in good running condition but I was wondering it has 5 rollers on the rail
and it has a large hole in each track pad, now in the past Ive seen JD Crawlers in shows which the pads were solid (no hole in pad) are the tracks on my crawler for snow whereas the snow would not build up between the track and sprocket? Any comment on the JD 40C how collectable are they? Also as far as I can figure out the SN is 69483 and I kinda figure its about 1955??Any idea what kinda price these machines are going for (with a dozer blade hook-up)?? Thanks Ron

Hi Ron,

Your right about the holes in the pads, they are snow pads and should be either 10" or 12" in width. As for value without documentation of what has been done to the machine $5000 with a blade is about right. Please remember that these little engines have a lot of torque and will run even with bad valves and crank bearings. When you say the engine is in good shape I am guessing here that you have done a compression test and pulled the bottom crank bearings and checked for wear. And that the oil pressure is where it should be at full speed. (30 psi)The oil pressure will tell a lot. If it is low then either the pump is worn or the bearings have a lot of wear and can not keep the pressure in spec. due to the leakage. The compression will give indication of the rings and or valves.

The last one I heard about selling at auction in Southcentral Kansas brought over $5000, as I recall. I didn't see it or know its condition.
