Just bought a case 580C, it's an early 80's model, look's good, good metal, good tires, but has a broken crank between #1 &2 cyl. Is my best bet to buy a short block assembly, or just replace the crank and bearings, the rest of the unit looks good, and we drove it on the trailer, did this cause more damage? Where is the best place to get a crank? Anyone had the same problem with these units? What does is weigh?
thanks for any help

It should be a 207D, I realize that I haven't worked on one in over 15 years but I worked on the 580 ck thru the super D models and only remember the 207D and 207DT. The cranks normally broke after engine overhauls when the journals were turned down. For some reason, the shops didn't like to leave a radius cut at the edges, thus the crank broke at that sharp edge left after turning. If the unit was just overhauled, it should be safe to just replace the crank and bearings. If you get a used crank, I didn't like to go over the .010 cut due to the way these cranks were so picky when turned. Be sure to check the timing on that 207 because the feds got to it for a while and had Case change the timing and fuel delivery. My records might be a little outdated but if you have the A151113 injection pump, set the timing a 0 degress. All others are 8 degress btdc. Good luck those were some really neat machines that would dig.

I cant say ive ever had the same problem with that particular tractor.ButI have worked several other engines with a broken crank. One thing to always consider is why that crank broke. If you decide to use the same block make sure to have the main bearing saddles at least checked for alignment or if they are not in spec. have the block line bored. You may be able to put in a new crank and every thing is fine but it is always better to pay a little more now and not alot more later. If you decide to go with a short block try pricing one right from case or try jasper engines and transmissions they have a web site and I would imagine you can find a local dealer from that.Is that engine internally balanced? If it is a worn out ballancer or one not timed properly with the crank can and will eventually break the crank.Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, I checked yesterday and this unit has 2460 hours, and the engine is a model 207b.
Is this a case engine?, I haven't got it home yet, seems my pickup isn't gonna move it, which I half expected, so I'll borrow a friends dump this weekend. I also put a deposit on one of my own. I plan on making a few dollars with this thing, so I may just buy a shortblock and be done with it.
