I'm looking for a small crawler for discing, light dozer work. A neighbor has a Case 310, good running condition, for sale, $4,000. Good deal? Are there other similar sized dozers that would be better choices?
Thanks.

Any small dozer that runs will cost anywhere from $2500 to $6000. The most expensive parts to watch out for is the undercarriage. A severly worn undercarriage could cost close to the same amount to repair even with used or rebuilt parts. Feel the bushings under the track to see if severly grooved or cracked. Replacing pins and bushings can cost up to $3500.00, if no cracks and pins are in good shape a turn job would cost around $800.00 give or take a couple hundred.

Sprockets, rollers and idlers also should be checked for excessive ware. Make sure there is still some adjustment room on the idlers to tighten the track. If not stay away unless you have money to burn. And believe me, a lot of these machines show up for sale when the undercarriage repair costs exceed the value of the machine. If you can post a picture of the undercarriage of the machine I know a couple of us who can give you an idea of the condition and value.
