A D4 that new is in the prime of its life if it has been well maintained. These tractors are in high demand due to their smaller size. They will not be cheap. An early D4D with Power Shift will run $30K for one in good shape to $45K for one in great shape. These are rough guesses. Call your local Cat dealer and ask him for the blue book value for the machine your looking for. If you are looking for a tractor for minor utility usage I might suggest looking for a popular tractor in the D6 class which is a bit older. Parts shouldn't be a problem if it had significant production volumes, like and older D6. If you really need a machine to use day in and day out. The best advice is to talk to the Cat dealer. He knows these machines better than anyone. Good Luck!

A few things might include overall appearance- next does it leak any fluids- will it start and move- will it make power by spinning both tracks- does it have known problems- what will it cost to freight to your location- is there parts available- last, is it a fair price...

Scooby:

One of the most important places to look on any crawler is the tracks. Determine overall condition
or life still available on the sprockets, chain rails etc. Worn tracks spell big repair costs.
D4,s make good tractors, they are lighter and can be moved with a 3/4 ton truck if careful and there small enough to work in some tight spots. I currently have 4 older models myself.

I have owned a D4D LPG for 2 years it is a good machine. I have repaleced the undercarrige this was very costly, but over all it is a great machine. It weighs over 10 ton so don't try and haul it with a 3/4 ton truck.
