I have a backhoe with a case 207 engine and a Roosa Master Model DB fuel injector pump. The engine only runs when I let fuel drain from the injector pump's timing window. Does this indicate that the pump needs to be rebiult? If so, how much will it cost?

Thanks, John

John, If your tractor will run with the timing window open, I would have to say that you have trouble in the fuel return circiut. Fuel must constantly be allowed to pass back to the fuel tank. If it can't, the tractor will not run. This could be a restricted line someplace between the pump and tank. The number one cause (for me) is small pieces from the plactic governor drive that break up. They find their way into a little orfice fitting on the top of the pump. This fitting is where the tank return line attaches. Clearing out this fitting will likely make your tractor run, but the plastic ring on the governor drive inside the pump is the real issue. You need to have it repaired by someone familiar with this procedure. Sometimes it can be done without removing the pump. I would recommend taking it (pump only if you are comfortable removing it and reinstalling it later) to a professoinal.

Bruce is right about the govonor ring, but I would check he return lines at each injector to see if its plugged in one of the tees first. Just loosen the return line at the pump an see if it runs, then you will know if its in the pump or the lines.

Even if it is plugged at an injector, It's still caused by the pump having a bad governor ring, thus anytime this condition occurs, you have to get the pump fixed, and you have to pull your return lines off the injectors, and clean everthing out, otherwise you are going to have the same problem with the new pump because the lines were never taken care of properly.

Not realy! I have removed more pieces of rubber from bad eastman seals than i have govonor ring parts. And how are the govonor ring parts getting through the orfice??

Not all Roosa masters ran a real small orfice, we have had some with a big enough opening that "bits" of the retainer ring will go right into the return lines. You're right about the seals though, we've found that problem too, but most of the time it ends up being a governor ring. The rings can be a real pain in the "you know where" to switch sometimes too! LOL
