  • There is no mention of the seals on the trasmission case[PTO hub, PTO shaft and hyd pump-clutch shaft. These should be changed every time the Z split and frequently the cause of oil leakage.

  • did you install a speedi sleeve on the crankshaft before insalling the seal? because seals get hard and are very abrasive and cut into the crankshaft surface and make a very bad groove in the metal and makes a bad sealing surface.

  • Greg you are correct about the reason you were experiencing clutch slippage on you Oliver. The clutch is made by Auburn Clutch. The pressure of the springs is compounded by locating them under the release levers. The pressure is transmitted through the lever to the pressure plate. Auburn was the only clutch manufacturer to use this arrangement. It has a couple of advantages. Since the pressure is compounded, a lighter spring can be used offering a softer clutch pedal. Also, the base of the spring does not contact the cast iron plate directly therefore heat is not transmitted to the spring causing a them to lose there pressure in cases where the clutch gets overheated. Since the pressure is transmitted throught the lever, the lever height directly affects plate load. Your levers were contacting the throwout bearing near the outside indicating that some of the levers were high. The higher the lever, the less the spring will be compressed and produce less plate load. This clutch is unique in that if the linkage can handle it you can set the levers as low as possible to create a heavier plate load. Good job, Greg. Jim.

  • Jim, Can you adjust the release levers without doing the split?
Duane Eberhart wrote on Saturday, January 20, 2007 (PST):
  • If the fingers aren t adjusted to an equal height the clutch will chatter as you go to leave the pedal out to engage the clutch. I have a 1959 550 that I did a Z split and replaced the clutch assembly a few years ago, got the whole assembly at NAPA...but while in there I needed to rebuild the PTO clutch.

  • Nice job, your tractor looks first-rate and I suspect you took as much pains on the other items as you did on the clutch ! NICE JOB !!! Jim B.
