Most of what you need to do has to be done on your PC. You have to: 1. Scan the image 2. Store in a format that a web browser can view, and which is acceptable to a hosting site like photobucket. 3. Possibly clean the image up. 4. Possibly compress the image.
Your scanner should have come with software for use on Windows or Mac. For Linux machines, the standard scanner software is SANE, which supports pretty much any scanner. Scan your image and save it. Your software should support multiple formats, such as PNM, TIFF, JPEG, GIF or PNG. For pictures, JPEG is the first choice, while for line art use GIF or PNG.
There are a couple of freeware tools you can use to clean up or compress images. The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a very powerful tool for image editing, similar to photoshop. ImageMagick is a set of command-line utilities that are very useful for compressing and/or converting images.
Once you have an image that looks good in your browser, and has been compressed to a reasonable size (say 100 KB or less), you can upload to a site like PhotoBucket so you can link it into a message.
