The Corporation commission (or it's equivalent in Kansas) will have the records of incorporation of the company and when closed, and the reason. There's usually a fee if info not online (Oregon has 5 yrs online; $50--yes, $50--for info on earlier). (Ripoff). (Altho often named Corporation Comm, will also have records for partnerships, assumed business names, etc.)
If you're close to a decent pub lib they might have a collection of City/County Directories, in which you can tell when company listed, and when it disappears from listings.
Stock option/savings program I can't comment on.
You could post inquiries for other old employees in local paper, local Craigslist, etc. Local paper might have morgue articles about company, especially shutdown/failure/merger. Local Historical Society might have file on company.
There're probably simpler routes I haven't thouight of. Good luck.
