You Are Correct.
I never remove the hoe unless I have rear axle work to do.
Cut the hose off use a socket. You can also try heat,don't take much,but I don't like flames around oil/grease.
Also there should be a fitting with O-ring screwed into the valve body changing over to jic flare. If you say you don't then someone has probably cobbeld the hose on.
