The chart says 18ga is good for up to 10a which in 12v is only 120w.. 10ga, according to the chart is 100a at 12v or 1200w which is like running a hairdryer. I'm not 100% sure how an underground dog fence works but I imagine it put some particular frequency through the wire that the collar responds to. In which case I'd expect it to be VERY low voltage and amperage. If you could cut the 18ga wire with your fingernail its cheap crappy wire. I've used alot of 18ga for speaker wire over the years and its way tougher than that. Don't use one example of cheap wire to consider all wire bad.
