Cat took a severe shellacking when they sold Challenger. Spent 250 million on the 700-800 series design and sold the whole thing including the plant for 20 million and a few shares of Agco stock. Doesn't include the vast millions of dollars spent developing the original concept and releasing the original models. Cat finally realized that this was a losing proposition and best to get out before throwing away any more money. However they did make a run at buying CIH before Fiat bought them, knew they had to get bigger or get out. They were just a little too tight fisted.
