The tranny cooler will help from overheating a 400 for sure. I have one on my 80 3/4 ton and we do some serious pulling from time to time with it. A B&M shift kit will help, but it is not necessary if you are going to pull with the truck ocassionally. Simply starting in first gear and using your colum shifter like a manual tranny will work just fine on extreamly heavy loads. You may want to consider using Royal Purple tranny fluid. I have been using it for several years and that stuff is magic in a bottle. It was designed for extreamly hard core conditions, and it works great in GM 400 tranny's.
